Well what d'you know...?

There's an article on the winners of the National Poetry Competition here. First place has gone to Sinead Morrissey, who I've recently been raving about on this blog. Now I'm not saying that I told you so, but... well, you get the idea.

Hi Oliver,

Poetry, as you say, occupies a small world - I think I was at Oxford at the same time as you; indeed, I believe I managed to get an atrociously bad undergrad poem into a pamphlet you edited.

Anway, I notice you're interested in Sinead's work, though have been a bit disappointed by There Was Fire...That's quite an old book: it was undergoing publication while she was still an undergrad in Dublin, so it's v much the work of a young writer (though I have to say that if I'd written it when I was an undergrad, I'd be pretty pleased with it). Anyway, The State of the Prisons and Between Here and There are the ones you want - you should be able to get them on Amazon, English bookstores are notoriously bad at stocking Irish poetry.

How about that Irish-meets-Welsh weekend! I'm based at Queen's now though I wasn't around that weekend. I hear it was pretty dire...

Hope the above is of some use anyway: if you like Sinead's work, you might also enjoy Leontia Flynn - her new book Drives has just come out with Cape, some fanstastic stuff in there....

Miriam -

Hi - yes, it was me, a small world indeed. How'd you come across the blog, btw? Hope you liked it - there's much more to come, very shortly...

And yes, I did publish one of your poems - in the Turl St Anthology. I think you're being a bit harsh on your poem (yes - I reread it...): with student poems you can only look for the positives! I say that defensively, too, since I came across some of my uni stuff at the same time [shudder!].

The Irish-meets-Welsh w/e was *mixed*, certainly (I'm being nice, but I was there on the generosity of the Arts Council, so don't want to be ungrateful). I certainly felt a bit conspicuously English...

I've found more Sinead Morrissey - more to follow on the blog - but ta for the prompt about Leontia Flynn, which reinforces other good things I've heard about her: I'll get onto the Poetry Book Society immediately! And ta for your message, too - do keep in touch.

Hi Oliver,

I found the blog whilst looking for reviews of Sinead's work - I'm applying to the AHRC for a fellowship based on post-ceasefire poetry, and was hoping to find some reviews that weren't from either Tower or the Guardian. I still have the Turl St anthology (as, I think do my parents and my sister - that was my first ever published poem), but I like to keep my copy firmly closed!

I see you're also interested in Ciaran Carson - have you read Breaking News, his previous book? I'm really fond of that one - much more minimalist than his usual style. If you like his more exuberant stuff, though, you might also enjoy Alan Gillis: there's a big influence there, but Alan's poems are more attuned to contemporary Belfast (ie consumerist binging, mobile phones instead of chinooks, that kind of thing).

I'm increasingly sorry that I missed that Irish/ Welsh conference, actually - I heard lots of hilarious stories about Welsh performance poets running up and down the aisles etc. I was at an open-mic event like that in St Andrews in March this year, and it certainly was a spectacle. I suddenly realised that people in Belfast take poetry quite seriously!

What are you at these days, anyway - still writing, I presume? Any publications, or publications in the offing?

Thanks - Breaking News sound a good recommendation (CC often shows glimpses of the qualities to be a strong pared down writer - would be good to see him really go for it). Alan Gillis is a name I've heard a couple of times - his concerns sounds interesting too. And I've just bought Leontia Flynn's Drives: it's next on the list... (I'm currently reading Annemarie Austin's On the Border).

Yes, I'm still writing, doing readings and workshops, though not sending work out (well, once recently, but I've not heard anything...). Soon, perhaps. What about you?

Do you want to drop me an email at firstnamesurname@yahoo.co.uk? I have an idea you might be interested in. All the best, O

Hi Oliver,

Me again - I tried to email you at that address, but it bounced. Do you have another one I could try?

Miriam :)

Was it this (backwards) that you tried?

Otherwise you could find my work email via www.audiencesyorkshire.org.uk...

No, because I'm completely thick I typed exactly what you had written...I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek address! Will email to the proper one when I get back to Belfast on Wednesday. My God, I'm dull these days!
